Amakusa stones are mined from the sharpening stone mines located in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan. Amakusa stones has long been used as a general purpose sharpening stone since the Sengoku period. The red striped Amakusa stones are also known as a "tora-to" which literally translates to tiger stone. The stones may come in various stripe patterns or shape depending on where it was cut out from but please understand that is one of the characteristics of a natural stone.
The red Amakusa stone is recommended for sharpening kitchen knives and woodworking tools.
