Fujihiro brand chisels are hand forged by Chutaro Imai, a blacksmith who has been making chisels almost 50 years and is located in Sanjo City, Niigata prefecture. Hollow on the back of the blade is single. A Mortise chisels is designed specifically for deep mortise work in carpentry and heavy cabinet work. It is made with a square section and a thick, robust blade to be able to cut out mortises and joints in joinery work. This white steel blade is then laminated to wrought iron, and heat tempered to Rockwell c64-65 to ensure a tough and lasting edge. Finally, the handle is turned from Japanese Red oak and fitted with hand hammered hoop. (Photo shows a 1/4″)
Maintaining the chisels is a must. I recommend applying Camellia oil prior to storing in the canvas or leather chisel holder which are available for purchase separately.
